I think everyone has a secret longing to change the world,to make a difference, to achieve greatness. We each have a vast reservoirs of skills. Our unique intelligence has something to offer to the world in a new way. However we do it, we have to start with ourselves. Throw out any negative ideas you hold. Realize that age, sex, ethnicity, language, poverty level, personal circumstances, lack of “education”, none of these are barriers to what we can each accomplish.
Bunker Roy, the founder of Barefoot College in India, demonstrated just what inherent dignity and potential the human race has to improve its life. You can watch a presentation by him here:http://www.ted.com/talks/bunker_roy.html He works with the poorest villagers, both to preserve their natural wisdom and methods and to educate them on lifestyle changes for their communities, such as improved water sources and solar power. Most participants are illiterate and impoverished, many don't share a common verbal language, and all of them, every single last one, is successful.
What is success? This success is best measured by arriving at our goals and knowing we've made positive changes, small or large. It may bring money or fame, or it may bring peace and contentment. It may merely keep us from living complacently, or it may drive us on to further opportunities. It is living a fulfilling and extraordinary life. It is normal.
Bunker Roy makes the point that women can be the most effective contributors to their communities. They are the strongest link in the fabric that weaves communities together. They are most likely to pass down knowledge to their children, to remain in their villages, to support their friends and families and to encourage others to become involved in improvement projects. I think parents, female or mail, who are raising their children in a conscious way, are making society stronger!Another very relevent point is that education does not create genius. Genius is inherent in all of us. What counts more than any certification is what we can do with the knowledge we have. Recognize genius, search it out in your self and use it to the fullest! May we each be empowered to share our knowledge and bring to fruit all our goals. May we start with ourselves and our families and light up the world as we go!
