The Clever boys were the guests of the ship captain, aboard the big cargo ship, the Sea Princess. They had recently prevented a robbery on the Sea Princess, when she was transporting some valuable paintings for a museum. They had heard the thieves trying to climb on board and had turning on the Sea Princess's flood lights to scare them off. The embarrassed thieves had splashed overboard and zoomed off in their motorboat. They ran out of fuel in the middle of the sea and the Clever boys had captured them. The captain was grateful that nothing had been stolen and that the would-be thieves had been caught. He invited the boys to be his guests on a round the world voyage with him.
The Sea Princess arrived in a Carribbean port to load up with a cargo of bananas, and pineapples. It was discovered that she had a leak, so everyone was told to go ashore. The necessary repairs would take a week to complete, so the captain booked rooms for the boys at a rain forest resort down the coast.
At the resort, the boys unpacked their bags and went to swim in the pools. When they were tired of swimming, they sat and talked to the other guests in the lobby. Suddenly a young woman came in crying out that she had been robbed! Someone had stolen her precious golden necklace from her room. It was in the shape of a gold disc and was engraved with a native Indian design.
The Clever boys said they would help. They went with her to her room, to search for clues. When she opened her door, they saw that her room was in disarray.
“Tell us what happened.” said Fred.
“I took off my necklace and put it on the sink.” said the girl. “Then I showered and left it there while I went downstairs for a massage. When I came back just now, my room was all disorganized and the necklace was gone!”
“I was wondering if you usually keep things so jumbled up.” laughed Joe. “It looks like the robbers foraged through everything!”
There were socks on the lamp post, shirts on the curtain rods, pens uncapped and spilled on the desk, and books fluttered open on the floor.
“No.” said the girl, picking up one shoe. “I wonder where the other one is? I usually put things away. The robbers must have been searching for more jewelry.”
“Hey Fred!” called Joe. “This window is open.”
“And there is a tree coming up to the window.” said Fred, peering out. “This may be an important clue. Maybe the robbers climbed this tree and left foot prints in the soft dirt below.”
“I'll climb down and see.” said Joe. He headed out the window. Joe was strong and it wasn't difficult for him to climb.
“Hello you.” said Joe to a sloth sleeping on one branch. The sloth opened its eyes, blinked at Joe and went back to sleeping. “You're too slow to have been the theif!”
Joe landed on the soft ground. He was in a beautiful garden with large trees, flowers and a pool full of fish. Along the pool wall was a family of monkeys. Babies were sleeping with their mothers. Papa monkeys were snoozing and some playful young ones were chasing each other. One monkey looked strange.
“Poor thing. Did it get hurt?” wondered Joe when he saw the monkey holding its head. Then the light fell on the monkey and Joe was astonished to see a glittering gold disc on its head.
“So you're the theif.” laughed Joe. “Come here.”
But the monkey was scared and ran up a tall, thin tree. Joe didn't dare follow.
Fred arrived in the garden, having taken the stairs down. “You watch him Joe. I think I know how we can get Mr. Monkey down.”
Fred ran to the resort kitchen. “Can I have a banana?” he asked a waitress standing at the back door. He quickly explained the case of the stolen necklace. The waitress said she would help.
“Wait here.” she told Fred, and disappeared into the kitchen. She returned a moment later with a bowl of coconut with sliced bananas on top.
She and Fred walked to the garden together.
“Here monkeys!” she called. “It's a little early for their supper, but they always come fast when they are called for food.”
The monkey with the golden disc on his head climbed out of the tree and joined the others for the food. While he was busy eating, Joe snatched the necklace from its head.
The girl was very grateful to have the golden disk back. She insisted on taking the Clever boys out for dinner in town. They had mango drinks and talked about their adventures. They wondered what new excitement would be coming their way next. Little did they know that their father would be needing their help very soon on a new case of top secret importance. They would soon be taking a private jet home and in less than a week, they would be going from the rainy tropics, to one of the driest places on earth to help hide a fortune in the Sahara Desert. They would meet a very old man and see a secret cave that had been used to store treasures for many thousands of years...
