Japanese postage stamp from 1910PODGE'S MOTHER
Friendly was a good cat mother. But Podge was a handful so sometimes she needed Grandma's help. He was so large so early in life that Friendly couldn't always carry him even though she wanted to. She would pick him up, then drop him, then try again, and finally she would go find Grandma. Grandma would pick up little Podge and take him where Friendly wanted him to go.
When Friendly had business to do on her own, she would want to leave Podge with a baby sitter. A good sitter is hard to find, so she chose the next best thing - a safe place. Her favorite place to leave him was under the kitchen sink, where Grandma stored the cat food. She felt sure he would be safe and happy there.
Though merely a cat, Friendly knew the importance of pleasing people.
"If they get mad at you, you might end up in the snow," she would warn Podge.
"And what ever you do, don't jump on the table."
Podge was a mischevious kitten. He didn't always listen to what his mother said.If Grandma scolded him, Friendly would too. She would pin him down and give him a good washing with her rough tongue. She always taught him gently.
